One thing I really love about Rin and his Australian parents is how they give Haruka his space before dinner. They don’t sit him down and drill him with questions (Lori and Russell probably understand his personality from all the things Rin told them over the years) but instead let him de-stress by getting to know Winnie the dog first.  Rin is probably inside catching up with his Australian parents, but they seemed to let Haruka alone to get used to the surroundings first.

Haruka was clearly (and understandably) very nervous about visiting with people that spoke English (since English is his worst subject) but when they all sit down to dinner together, Lori and Russell were so gentle when speaking to Haruka, even re-phrasing questions so that Haruka would understand better on his own.

And Lori used some Japanese (and mackerel) to make Haruka feel more comfortable at the table. Even though it was one Japanese word, I think the familiarity of “saba” was enough for him to feel a little more part of the conversation.

They never rushed him to understand what they were saying, or made any comments on his accent or the amount of Japanese he knew, instead they just patiently communicated with him, and I think that probably helped make him feel more at ease, and possibly in a small way helped raise his self-esteem later on in the episode.

I’m also really glad that Rin didn’t enable Haruka by translating everything, but trusted his Australian parents to communicate in a way Haruka could understand.

Though there were also times they allowed Rin to translate to let Rin filter how much of his crush for Haruka would show.

This homestay part was really important to me because I’ve been to quite a few homestay dinners over the years (both in Japanese and Spanish-speaking households) and I’ve encountered many different types of hosts and the ones I’ve always felt more comfortable with and learned the most from are the ones that acted exactly the way Lori and Russell did. Bless Rin and his Australian parents.

This is a good post.

Crows are scary
They

  • use tools
  • Can be taught to speak (like parrots)
  • Have huge brains for birds
  • like seriously their brain-to-body size ratio is equal to that of a chimpanzee
  • They vocalize anger, sadness, or happiness in response to things
  • they are scary smart at solving puzzles
  • some ravens stay with their mates until one of them dies
  • they can remember faces
  • SIDENOTE HERE BECAUSE HOLY SHIT.  They did an experiment where these guys wore masks and some of them fucked with crows.  Pretty soon the crows recognized the masks = douchebag.  But the nice guys with masks they left alone.  THEN, OH WE’RE NOT DONE, NO SIR crows that WEREN’T EVEN IN THE EXPERIMENT AND NEVER SAW THE MASK BEFORE knew about mask-dudes and attacked them on sight.  THEY PASSED ON THE FUCKING INFORMATION TO THEIR CROW BUDDIES.
  • They remember places where crows were killed by farmers and change their migration patterns.

Guys I’m really scared of crows now.

I just wanted to say your tutorial for doing a dread wig like Mink's was fabulous and so easy to follow! I used it to make my Mink wig and it was so much easier than making actual dreads, much lighter than the original wig too! About how many skeins if yarn did you use, cuz I bought way too much apparently haha

Thank you very much! If you have any photos of what you’ve done, i’d love to see them. hit me up on my FanPage :3 (I check for comments much more frequently on there )

I bought 1 Huge skein…I still have quite a bit left over.
